Azienda Agricola SangervasioVia Palaiese, 56036 San Gervasio - Palaia (Pisa) Web site: www.sangervasio.com |
History
The ancient hamlet of Sangervasio was founded in 754 AC to defend the small Romanic church. The castle was built at the end of 900 AC, and was once the property of the Counts Della Gherardesca. Today Sangervasio still shows the old circular plan, with the villa and the cellar rising from the powerful basements of the ancient fortress. Since 1960 the estate is owned by the Tommasini family.
Location
It’s tucked in an enchanting corner 25 Km. East of Pisa, on the first gentle hills of the river Era valley. The estate covers 400 hectares, of which 22 are grown with grapes, between 160 and 200 meters, amidst a pristine nature, rich with olive and cypress trees, surrounded by a forest of oaks and maritime pine trees. The climate is Mediterranean, dry and well ventilated. The proximity of the sea and its breezes contribute to clean the air from the haze, and guarantee a constant and abundant illumination of the vineyards.
Territory and Vineyards
The soils of Sangervasio are of marine origin, rich in fossil sea shells, sand, and with a good amount of clay. The abundance of minerals in the soil gives the wines their characteristic “salty” notes.
A good reserve of underground water, when brought up to the surface with appropriate tilling techniques, helps the vines overcome the summer droughts that often strike Tuscany, and allows a balanced and hom geneous ripening of the grapes.
Since 1994, 22 hectares of vineyards have been planted, mostly with Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, and with a selection of white varieties (Chardonnay, Vermentino and Sauvignon Blanc). The new vineyards have from 6,000 to 12,000 vines per hectare, the latter being found in two blocks grown with Sangiovese and Merlot. From 1996 the estate has applied the principles of organic farming, certificated by Bioagricert, and more recently it has embraced the bio-dynamic approach to viticulture, in order show even more respect for its unspoiled nature.
Wines and Wine Style
The wines of Sangervasio mirror the pristine nature in the midst of which the estate grows its grapes. This results in balanced and complex wines, that translate both the care given to the vineyards and the soils’ marine nature, into an intense, mineral profile.
Sangervasio produces wines with a contemporary style, made with the contribution of international varieties, but mostly with local grapes, which are the estate’s main focus. Two young red wine, the Chianti Docg more traditional, the Sangervasio, a Sangiovese with small parts of international grapes, pleasant and fruity, ideal for a daily consumption.
Two wines borne from the selection of the grapes grown in the highest density vineyard: I Renai and A Sirio, the former a Merlot, the latter a Sangiovese, both with great structure and long lived. Now the last born Cabernet Sauvignon complete our idea of the selections wines.
Two white wines: Sangervasio Bianco characterized by an elegant body and wonderfully crisp, and a Chardonnay made only in those years capable of guaranteeing balance and complexity.
Finally, a Vinsanto dessert wine made with traditional white grapes, Recinaio, with a very strong personality,
not afraid to be paired with chocolate or very tasty cheeses.
